The Hot Rod Deluxe is an institution – for two decades, Fender’s workhorse has been a fixture pubs, clubs, practice rooms and jam rooms the world over, and its versatility and fantastic tones have seen guitar players big and small come to rely on its charms for their live sound.

How do you improve on a legend? That’s the lofty task that Fender set itself when it came to overhauling the Hot Rod Deluxe for its fourth iteration, but the folks at Fender’s Ensenada factory know what they’re doing, and the result is a fantastic amp that offers more of what guitar players have come to depend on from the Hot Rod series. You get the two classic channels (with ‘More Drive’ option on the drive channel), 40 watts of valve power, and a single 12-inch Celestion speaker that you’d expect, but under the hood things have been tweaked to offer an improved playing experience.
The preamp circuitry has been revoiced to improve note definition, so your tone stays articulate and clear no matter how hard you push it, and to give a smoother distortion character overall. When it comes to ambience, the built-in spring reverb has also been enhanced to ensure that you get that classic and much sought-after Fender reverb sound at any volume. On the outside, the Deluxe’s new, lightweight pine cabinet is covered in classic black vinyl, but the iconic silver grille cloth has been lightly aged to give things a more retro look.
